2014 has been a very special year for thousands of Girlguiding Cymru young Members throughout the whole of Wales - the Brownies have celebrated their 100th birthday.

The Big Brownie 100th Birthday was a fantastic achievement that Girlguiding Cymru is very proud of and a huge mile stone celebrated. There were a variety of different events and activities undertaken across Wales with the main aspect focusing on the party element. These ranged from sleeping under the stars to exploring caves – the list is endless. It was all about the girls and how they wanted to celebrate their special year. After an incredible 100 years of the charity running – Brownies is still the place where girls aged 7-10 wish to be.

Some of the activities Brownies participated in included:-
  • Biggest Ever Sleepover at the Millennium Stadium
  • Guinness World Record Attempt
  • Big Brownie Birthday Tea Parties
  • Big Brownie Birthday Stay Aways
  • Big Browinie Birthday Fun Party Days
  • Big Brownie Birthday Star Challenge
  • Star Quest (one day events)
Felicity Ladbrooke, Chief Commissioner said “Brownies are just as popular today as they were 100 years ago”.

To mark this great achievement, Girlguiding Cymru has launched a major campaign to improve our Brownie House in the grounds of the Girlguiding Cymru Headquarters in Llandinam.  To find out more about the project click here.

Girlguiding Cymru provides the girls with a place to have fun, gain valuable skills and make lasting friendships. Brownies love to explore and go on adventures, experiencing thrilling activities from abseiling to rafting.

Girls from across Wales have held an extra-special birthday party to mark the 100th birthday of Brownies.

The 1,200 Welsh Brownies had the chance to take part in a special, girl-only adventure to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 28-29 June, as Girlguiding Cymru staged its Biggest Sleepover Ever by the field of dreams.

Brownies welcomed Girlguiding Cymru Chief Commissioner Felicity Ladbrooke to join in with the party, which included a disco with One Direction Adventure tribute band, sing-a-long with Ascendance, and of course being able to sleep in the stadium.

On Sunday morning a circus skills workshop included clowns, unicyclists, juggling, stilt walkers, balloon artists and dancers.

Brownie (Mali – age 8) “It was awesome celebrating the Big Brownie Birthday! My favourite part was the One Direction Tribute band.”  (Twin Brownies Ffion and Ellen – age 8) “My father was really jealous that we got to sleep in the Millennium Stadium.”

Girlguiding Cymru Chief Commissioner, Felicity Ladbrooke said: “This year is all about the Brownies, and how they want to celebrate their special year - it was brilliant to see the girls have so much fun at the biggest sleepover for Brownies in Wales. The girls loved the entertaining breakfast and especially the One Direction tribute band.  A huge thank you to the volunteer Leaders who made it possible for the girls to come – everyone had a fantastic time.”

Brownies opens up a world of exciting challenges to girls aged seven to 10, giving them the space to try new things and make brilliant friends. Girls take part in a hugely varied weekly programme incorporating everything from stargazing, world issues and science to abseiling, canoeing and zip wiring.

The event was held at the Millennium Stadium as part of the Community Events initiative which hosts up to 15 community organisations per year without the hire charge borne by commercial organisations.

Mark Williams, stadium manager at the venue which is owned and operated by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), said: “The WRU is delighted to host the Brownies for what has been another fun and memorable event as part of the Millennium Stadium’s Community Events initiative. “It is a pleasure to extend our hospitality to over one thousand local Brownies today and we encourage community organisations from all over Wales to get in touch with their events for next year.”
