BROWNIES AND GUIDES HAVE FUN EXPLORING THEIR GUIDING HISTORY
Girlguiding Cymru received over £41,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Young Roots project to help young people explore their heritage. The Young Roots project enabled local young volunteers from across Wales to discover the history behind Girlguiding in their local area.

Six Girlguiding Cymru Units who were selected to carry out the Young Roots project. The Units carried out interviews with past members as well as key community figures that had some involvement with their Unit. PUSHING BOUNDARIES PROJECT WINS HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND SUPPORT
Girlguiding Cymru has received over £41,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting new project, Pushing Boundaries, to be carried out across Wales.

Led by young volunteers from the local communities, the project focuses on the history of Girlguiding. The project will enable local young girls to discover the history behind Girlguiding in their area.  It will support inter-generational work by encouraging the girls to interview past members as well as key community figures. Old photographs, memorabilia and comparing challenges faced by girls in guiding past and present will be some of the areas that the girls will be exploring. The girls will learn how to record information digitally: by scanning, videoing and making audio recordings.  They will then share the information with their wider community by using Culture Beacons to display their findings in a fun and imaginative way. The young women who are leading the local projects will have the opportunity to gain a Level 3 Agored Cymru qualification – Train the Trainer as well as developing their leadership and organisation skills.

The project will engage with all four sections - Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and the Senior Section and will provide the girls with the opportunity to learn new skills as well as learning about the history of the organisation. Chief Commissioner, Lesley Mathews said: “We are delighted to have received the funding from Heritage Lottery Fund. The Young Roots project is an exciting new venture for Girlguiding Cymru and we can’t wait to get started.”

Richard Bellamy, Head of HLF in Wales, said: “We are enthusiastic about giving young people the chance to learn about heritage. Thanks to National Lottery players our Young Roots programme helps them to bring fresh ideas and energy to the task. Pushing Boundaries is an excellent example of how they can get involved, take decisions, develop new skills and interests, connect with their communities and have fun.”

Tom Pert, Innovation Manager for People’s Collection Wales, said: “We are delighted that Girlguiding Cymru have been awarded this grant – the Pushing Boundaries project will help the girls to gain new skills, and offers them the chance to use cutting-edge technology while learning about the history of the organisation and their communities”.
