GWENT :
Over 2000 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and Adult volunteers from Girlguiding Gwent gathered at Chepstow racecourse for a day of activities, These came under six categories. Glamorama included face painting, nail art, hand massage and hair braiding and was run by students from Coleg Gwent. The craft area saw musical instruments being made along with cards, Faberge eggs, crowns and streamers to name but a few of the 30 or so options open to the girls. Outdoors the girls could use the climbing wall, an assault course, a variety of bouncy castles and slides and have fun with sumo football, a cardboard maze and a surf simulator. Archery and touch rugby were well supported by girls of all ages, as was the tug of war organised by Gwent Young Farmers. Circus skills were also popular with giant bubbles floating across the racecourse and brightly coloured poys spinning around. Up in the stands there were classes in drumming and singing and ocarinas could be heard above the excited hum. The cheerleaders from Newport were very popular with girls of all ages as were the country dancing and street dancing. Girls could join in a variety of giant games such as Snakes and Ladders, bounce around on the space hoppers or join in a parachute game. The event finished with a grand parade led by a spectacular Chinese dragon. The procession being about a mile long! Music was supplied by Newport City Radio. The Mayor of Chepstow also attended and got involved with all of the activities and met many of the local members and spoke to them about why they enjoy being involved with guiding.
Charlotte and Hannah both agreed that the day was awesome with lots of great activities. “We really enjoyed the sumo football but we couldn’t play very well because we were laughing too much! The cardboard maze was brilliant too – we got lost for ages and had to be “rescued” buy one of the leaders!”

Doreen had the whole party including the Chief Commissioner in fits of laughter with her tales of camping in a bell tent, catching nits from sleeping with heads near the pole!! Tori James, youngest woman to climb Everest, and an ex Guide and Ranger enthralled everyone with her video of reaching the summit, but put it all down to what she had learnt as a Guide.
